Q: Are all the levels open to all ages?

A: Lil Starfish is for children age 6 months to 3 years. Preschool group lessons (Sandpipers, Cormorants, and Puffins) are for ages 3-5, and other group lessons (Otters, Sealions, Dolphins, and Orcas) are for ages 5-12. Our pre-swim team level (Sharks) is for ages 6-17 and our adult class (Sea Turtles) is for ages 13 and over. Private and semi-private lessons are available to all ages and abilities unless otherwise stated.

Q: How many students are in a swim lesson?

A: The swimmer to instructor ratio is the following:

Lil Starfish -- 10:1

Sandpipers -- 4:1

Cormorants -- 5:1

Puffins -- 5:1

Otters -- 4:1

Sealions -- 5:1

Dolphins -- 6:1

If you'd like to learn more about our Swim Lesson Scholarships, contact Whitney at [email protected]

Q: Where do lessons take place?

A: Our lower level group lessons take place in the Activity Pool. Upper level group lessons may take place partially or entirely in the Lap Pool. For private and semi-private lessons, where the lesson will take place will be dependent on swimmer ability, goals, and a conversation with the instructor.

Q: Can my child swim or play in the pool while lessons are going on?

A: Part of all of the Activity Pool is closed to open swim while group lessons are taking place (depending on how many lessons are going on). However, the small Kiddie Pool area will remain open.

Q: Will I be required to get in the water with my child?

A: Parents/guardians are only required to be in the water for our Lil Starfish level. For Lil Starfish, a parent/guardian is required to be in the water for the duration of each lesson for each child enrolled. For other group lessons, a parent/guardian is not required to be in the water but for Sandpipers, Cormorants, and Puffins, a parent/guardian may be in the water for lessons if they wish. For private and semi-private lessons, a parent/guardian is not required to be in the water but may be if they wish, except in the cases of multi-student private lessons with those under 3 years of age where a parent/guardian will be required to be in the water for each child enrolled.

Q: How do I know what level to sign my child up for?

A: Please reference the level chart above. If you still have questions, contact Whitney at 541-574-5860 or [email protected]

Q: My child is in the wrong level. Is it possible to move them?

A: A child being in the wrong level class poses a potential safety risk. If we have space, it may be possible to move the swimmer into the correct level, though it may be at a different time slot than the origial lesson. In the event that the appropriate class is full, the child's instructor will do their best to accommodate and teach the level-appropriate skills to all swimmers in the lesson. If the child is in a level that is too high for their skill and a safety risk is present, the child will be removed from the session and no refund will be provided.

Q: I want to unenroll. Will I be refunded?

A: You will receive a full refund for unenrollment if we are notified at least one week in advance of the class start date. You can view more of our refund policy here.

Q: I'm going to miss a class. Will I be refunded?

A: We are unable to provide a refund for any class that a student misses. For group lessons, you may request and be provided with a Complimentary Daily Pass for each swim lesson that is missed. For private lessons, if we receive notice at least 24 hours in advance, the instructor may be able to help you schedule a make-up lesson; in the event that a make-up lesson cannot be accommodated, you may request and be provided with a Complimentary Daily Pass for each swim lesson that is missed. You can view more of our refund policy here.

Q: My lesson was cancelled. Will there be another lesson?

A: In the event of inclement weather or sudden instructor unavailability, the Newport Aquatic Center will reschedule the missed lesson. We will do our best to provide you with as much notice as we can before a lesson cancellation. For group lessons, we will inform you of the rescheduled lesson date and if you are unable to attend, you may request and be provided with a Complimentary Daily Pass for each swim lesson that is missed. For private lessons, the instructor may be able to help you schedule a make-up lesson; in the event that a make-up lesson cannot be accommodated, you may request and be provided with a Complimentary Daily Pass for each swim lesson that is missed.

Q: What should I bring to lessons?

A: Please be ready in a swimsuit; for young students not yet toilet trained, please be wearing a swim diaper. The Aquatic Center does not have towels available or for purchase. If you do not have goggles, we can provide goggles for the duration of the lesson.

Q: Where should we go for lessons?

A: Please be showered and waiting on the bleachers in front of the Activity Pool for the start of the lesson. Instructors will call out the names of the students in their class and bring them to the class area.
