Dear Stranger Letter Exchange

dear stranger

Now until 10/31!

The Newport Public Library is partnering with Oregon Humanities to host the "Dear Stranger" letter-exchange project, connecting Oregonians through handwritten letters. Since 2014, this unique initiative has invited participants of all ages and backgrounds to share their experiences and ideas through the mail.

How to Participate:

  • Write a Letter: Begin with "Dear Stranger" and write about anything you like. You may also include photos, drawings, or other items that fit in an envelope. Consider this prompt for inspiration: What is the Oregon you want to live in? As the U.S. nears its 250th anniversary, what do you hope the next 250 years will hold for Oregon and the country?
  • Complete a Release Form: A release form is required to participate. Release forms are available at the Newport Public Library, NW Nye Street
  • Mail Your Letter: Send your letter and release form by October 31, 2024, to:
    Dear Stranger
    c/o Oregon Humanities
    610 SW Alder, Suite 1111
    Portland, OR 97205
  • Include your name and return address to ensure proper matching. You can also email your letter to programs@oregonhumanities.org. Postage support is available if needed.

What to Expect:

Your letter will be anonymously exchanged with another participant, and letters will be mailed out in November 2024. Writers under 18 must have parental consent.

Dear Stranger Drop-boxes:

To mark the project’s tenth anniversary, a drop-box will be available at the Newport Public Library from mid-August through October, providing everything needed to participate. “Dear Stranger" is supported by the Institute for Museum and Library Services' IMLS 250 project in partnership with the Federation of State Humanities Councils.
