The Queens of British Mystery
Presented by Dr. Conrad Schmitt, join us for a late afternoon journey to the past century as we delve into the
fascinating world of the Queens of British Mystery on Thursday, February 29 from 4-5 PM in the McEntee Meeting Room of the
Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street.
The Golden Age of English language, mystery novels is regarded as the period of the early twentieth century when the genre of the “Clue-Puzzle”
novel achieved its zenith. Six women, five from Great Britain and one New Zealander, are generally considered the “Queens of Mystery” from their
dominance of that period, and the vast compendium of literature that they left behind. The British authors were: Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers,
Josephine Tey, Margery Allingham, P.D. James, and the lone Kiwi, Ngaio Marsh.
Dr. Conrad Schmitt is a retired regional medical officer for the U.S. Department of State, and has been a resident of Gleneden Beach since 2011.
He holds a B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from San Jose State University and a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Texas at Austin.
He graduated medical school at Texas A and M University College of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in Psychiatry at the University of California,
Davis in Sacramento, California. Dr. Schmitt has visited 136 countries and has been to all the continents, including Antarctica.
